BELMONT MUSIC PUBLISHERS - The Works of Arnold Schoenberg

Works for smaller groups or ensembles

Arnold Schönberg – Educational Visions August 22 – 25, 2012.  The Arnold Schönberg Center created its Educational Visions Workshop as an outreach program for teachers both at work and those who are seeking new approaches to impart and learn more about the life and work of Arnold Schönberg; we are pleased that it has already been very successfully staged on several occasions.

Schönberg’s times and his oeuvre are such prominent parts of the 20th century that they clearly call for a way of looking at them which incorporates links to other arts and artists. Consolidated work on selected topics (including his sound world, the 12-tone method, painting, cultural and historical context) opens up ways and means of presenting Schönberg’s art and the times he lived in so that new approaches come to vivid life – at once exciting, sensory and analytical. The workshop is geared toward the classroom and musical instrument study alike (in so far as the latter is not only concerned with technical aspects of playing); materials and teaching models readily usable in everyday school situations illuminate the possibilities for interdisciplinary investigations and projects. Simple ensemble exercises, easily playable by beginners, provide young musicians with an immediate, hands-on experience of Schönberg’s world of sound, one which is still unusual to some. Other features of the workshop include a guided tour of the Center’s archive, sessions in Schönberg’s apartment in Mödling near Vienna and a discussion with his son Lawrence Schoenberg, as well as other opportunities to learn more about the great composer beyond scores and the literature.
